You do not need to know Colombian food before visiting Ruppys.
We created this space for you to discover it naturally—in a beautiful, calm and welcoming environment where nothing feels unfamiliar for long.
You may begin with a coffee you already recognise, then try a warm pandebono, a pan de yuca or your first freshly grilled arepa. There is no right way to begin. Simply come in, make yourself comfortable and allow curiosity to guide you.
From the moment you enter, Ruppys is designed to change the pace of your day.
The tall room, ornate chandelier, warm lighting and carefully restored details create a sense of occasion, while flowers, natural textures and gentle colours soften the building’s industrial character.
Quiet Latin music plays in the background. Coffee is being prepared. Arepas are browning on the grill. The atmosphere is warm and expressive, but never overwhelming.
It is somewhere to breathe, pause and stay awhile.
Your introduction to Colombia begins before you taste anything.
You will smell coffee being ground and freshly baked pandebono emerging from the oven. You may hear the gentle sound of food cooking and see an arepa being prepared in front of you.
The colours, ingredients, music and objects around you gradually reveal another culture—not through explanation alone, but through experience.
Trying unfamiliar food should feel exciting, not intimidating.
That is why familiar coffees and cakes sit alongside Colombian specialities. You can begin with something you know and add something new when you are ready.
Our team will explain the flavours and help you choose. The visual menus allow you to see the ingredients, texture and finished dish before ordering.
We want your first experience of Colombian food to feel effortless.
At the heart of our menu is the arepa: a warm maize bread with roots stretching back approximately 3,000 years.
It is grilled until gently golden, opened and served with flavourful fillings such as slow-cooked meats, beans, cheese, avocado and sweet plantain.
For Colombians, the arepa is everyday comfort—a food connected with home, family and shared tables. At Ruppys, we invite you to discover why something so simple has remained so loved for thousands of years.
Colombian coffee is even better when accompanied by something freshly baked.
Try it with pandebono, a golden Colombian cheese bread with a soft, satisfyingly chewy centre, or pan de yuca, made with cassava starch and cheese.
Choose something savoury, something sweet or simply ask us what pairs best with your coffee.
This may be your first taste, but we hope it will not be your last.
Upstairs, you can watch Ruppys at work. Coffee is poured, food is prepared and the activity of Argyle Street remains close by.
Downstairs, the atmosphere becomes softer and more intimate. Warm lighting, gentle colours and carefully divided seating create a peaceful place for conversation, reading, working or spending unhurried time with friends.
Choose the space that suits your day.
We wanted Ruppys to feel special without feeling exclusive.
The chandelier, brass details, marble-effect surfaces and carefully selected furnishings create an elegant setting. Reclaimed timber, historic objects and the working kitchen keep it warm, honest and approachable.
You can arrive in cycling clothes, meet someone for coffee, work quietly with your laptop or settle in for a relaxed meal. The surroundings may feel refined, but the welcome is always informal.
Look around and you will find details waiting to be discovered.
An old hand-operated maize grinder connects the arepa with the land and labour behind it. A reclaimed church door frame, an ornate mirror and a flower-dressed bicycle begin new lives inside the café. Above them, the chandelier contrasts with exposed industrial ductwork.
Not everything is explained immediately. We want the space to reward curiosity and reveal something new each time you return.
We created Ruppys because Colombian hospitality is about more than serving food.
It is about welcoming you generously, making you comfortable and offering you something prepared with pride. It is about conversation, time shared around a table and the pleasure of introducing someone to a flavour they may never have encountered before.
We wanted to offer that experience in a setting worthy of it: elegant, peaceful and full of atmosphere.
You may visit for Colombian coffee and discover your first arepa. You may come for breakfast, meet a friend, begin a cycle ride or simply find a quiet corner away from the pace of the day.
However you arrive, we want you to leave having experienced something genuine: a taste of Colombia, the warmth of our hospitality and a historic Birkenhead building given a new life.
Come in. Take your time. Discover Ruppys.
